Cultural Tolerance

These past few days in India we’ve been celebrating Diwali. It’s the biggest holiday in India, where people decorate their homes with lights, make celebrations in family, wear new clothes, give each other gifts, light up the sky with fireworks, and the employees get financial bonuses as well. Looks like Christmas, doesn’t it? However, Diwali …

The BOARD

This is THE BOARD.

I keep it in my bedroom in Brazil. Last year, when I decided I really needed to put my dream of travelling into practice, there were too many options and too many things I would like to do. So I decided to “brainstorm” myself. I made small notes in different colors according to relevant criteria that would help me decide which path would be the best for me. I wrote aspects and things according to the following criteria: “who am I?”, “what do I love?”, “what are my values?”, and “what do I want to accomplish?”. Now that I am back for a few days, and after almost 1 year I made the board, it feels really good that I look into it and see that so many things were accomplished, and so many aspects of myself got really stronger with my travelling experience. I would really advise everyone into making their own boards, it’s a great self-knowledge experience, and also helps you achieve your goals. Now it’s time to think of next year’s board.

Freedom of choice

This morning you woke up.Then you chose what clothes you would like to wear, what food you would like to eat and what song you would like to listen to on your way to work. Or if you would like to listen to any songs at all. Everyday, from the moment you wake up, you …

Thank you India!

Isn’t it amazing the journey that is life?

Today, coming back from lunch, walking at an empty sandy road in industrial Jaipur, I started to think of everything that has happened to me since I arrived in “Incredible India”. In only 2 months and a half so much has happened, so many happy but also difficult moments. In the end, it turns out that it really are those hard moments that make me grow the most. For this I am forever thankful. I am thankful for this entire experience, for overcoming challenges, for not losing faith, for all those difficult moments that make me become a stronger person each day. Just as I was thinking about this, my ipod starts playing “Thank You”, by Alanis Morissette, which happens to have an almost too perfect chorus for my thoughts:

“Thank you India
Thank you terror
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you frailty
Thank you consequence
Thank you thank you silence”
“Thank you India
Thank you providence
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you nothingness
Thank you clarity
Thank you thank you silence”

Life is just such a beautiful journey, even with all its imperfections.

Journeys

“Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” – Mark Jenkins

Unkown Artists

I have always admired artists and people with good drawing skills. So imagine what a lovely surprise when I arrived in India to find out the amazing drawings that people do with henna, also called mehndi. Anonymous faceless artists, who do hundreds or thousands of temporary artworks that will fade forever in a matter of days.

To some people, drawing is almost impossible, to them it’s easily done in a matter of a few minutes. Every time I get a henna tattoo done, everyone just loves it, which makes me feel better and happy…and the people who did the tattoo will probably never know the good they caused.
Today’s post is a tribute to them, all of these amazingly skilled people who probably will never be famous artists, but who still bring more beauty and joy to other people and into this world.
Simple people who create beauty.

The simplicity of happiness

In India I feel like I’m always sweating. My clothes are always dirty or ripped, I don’t have a car, my salary is the lowest ever, my shoes are all ruined…and I have never been so HAPPY with so little. India teaches you that you can just be yourself, and that you don’t need so …
